CHEWNING, Calvin MR. CALVIN CHEWNING Mr. Calvin Chewning, age 78, of Sugar Hill, GA passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2008. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 41 years, Laverne R. Chewning; parents, Ezra and Sallie Chewning; and brother, Alvin Chewning. He is survived by his: wife of four years: Shirley Thompson Chewning, Sugar Hill, GA; daughters and son-in-law: Vicky Pruitt, Buford, GA, Beth Chewning, Sugar Hill, GA, Jody and Scott Patterson, Pendergrass, GA, son and daughter-in-law: Wayne and Kim Chewning, Gainesville, GA; step children: Rhonda and Dee Rylee, Maysville, GA, Rodney and Melisa Thompson, Flowery Branch, GA; twelve grandchildren: Tonya Pruitt, Lee Chewning, Kyle Chewning, Scott Chewning, Ryan Patterson, Reid Patterson, Rhett Patterson, Misty Thompson, Brooke Thompson, Logan Thompson, Leia Rylee, Grant Rylee, two great grandchildren; Kisaryn McGuire, Logan Pruitt; sister: Virginia Smith, Murrayville, GA ; brother: Melvin Chewning, Decatur, GA; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Chewning was born July 6, 1930 in DeKalb County, GA. He was a 1948 graduate of Alexander School in Union Mills, NC. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy. He was retired from General Motors Lakewood Plant after 30 years of service. He was a former president and coach for Buford Athletic Baseball Association. He was an avid rabbit hunter. His favorite pastime was sports. He enjoyed playing, coaching and later watching his children and grandchildren play ball. He was a member of Ivy Creek Baptist Church in Buford, GA where he was also a former Sunday School Teacher. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home with Dr. Jim Ferguson officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery in Buford, GA. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Arrangements by: Junior E. Leroy Guffey, class of '43, died on August 30.


From the September 2, 2008 Daily Courier:
Leroy Guffey, 83, of Camp Creek Road, Union Mills, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Henderson Care Center in Forest City.
  He was a son of the late Jim Guffey and the late Dora Lee Owens Guffey.
  A native of Rutherford County, he was a member of Cane Creek Baptist Church, was a retired truck driver and was a Navy veteran of World War II.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Davis Guffey.
  Survivors include two sons, Dennis Guffey of Union Mills
and Larry Guffey of Forest City; three brothers, Preston Guffey of Union Mills, Arnold Guffey of Shelby and Ronald Guffey of Forest City; six grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren.
  The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept.
  2, at Cane Creek Baptist Church on U. S. 64, Union Mills, with the Rev. Danny Camp officiating. Burial will follow in the church cem­etery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
  Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.

Virginia Nordmann Gilreath (Tillie), class of '48, became ill at the ASI business meeting on Sunday, August 10 at the Round Hill Baptist Church.  She complained of chest pains.  She was rushed to Rutherford Hospital emergency room.  She was then admitted to a room on the second floor.

Lorene Thompson Obituary from the Friday, August 8 Courier.
 Lorene Ross Thompson, 89, of 3549 US 221 north, Union Mills, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at Rutherford Hospital.
  A native of Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late Willie Ross and Josephine Lewis Ross, and the widow of J.W. Thompson Sr. She was a member of Round Hill Baptist Church in Union Mills.
  Survivors include two sons, Larry Thompson of Rutherfordton, and J.W.
  Thompson Jr. of Charleston, S.C.; and two sisters, Alice Fite and Doris Martin, both of Forest City.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m.
  Saturday at Round Hill Baptist Church with the Rev.
  Lynn Williamson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
  Burial in the church cemetery.
  Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.

Ray Franklin Conner, (Class of '56) died on August 3rd.  The following is his obituary from the Daily Courier:
Mr. Ray Franklin Conner, age 71, of Union Mills, NC, died on Sunday, August 3, 2008 at Hospice House in Forest City.
  A native of Rutherford County, NC, he was the son of Simon J. and Esther Hodge Conner. He was retired after 31 years of service with Rutherford EMC.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sis­ters, Frances White and Dorothy Young; and two brothers, Hicks Conner and Jay Conner.
  He is survived by his wife, Mirinda 'Tinsey' Conner of Union Mills; two sons, Ray Conner and wife, Elaine and Gary Conner and wife, Rita, all of Union Mills;a granddaughter, Megan Conner Phillips and her husband, Fred of Forest City; one great-grandchild, Hayden Phillips; and two brothers, Jonas Conner of Union Mills and Don Conner of Moore, SC.
  Funeral services will be held at Crowe's Mortuary on Wednesday, August 5, 2008 at 3:00 pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Crowe's. Burial will be in the Round Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Thermal City Methodist Church, Union Mills, NC 28167 or to Hospice of Rutherford County, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.

Levi "Buddy" Thomason ('49) died yesterday, July 30.  The following is from the Daily Courier:
Levi Caldwell “Buddy” Thomason, 78, of Cliffside, died Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at Rutherford Hospital.
  A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Grady Thomason and Bessie Edney Thomason. He was a member of Centennial United Methodist Church and attended Shingle Hollow Congregational Holiness Church. Mr. Thomason was a veteran of the Air Force, having served in Korea. He retired from Duke Power and served as a Rutherford County Sheriff’s Deputy from 1958-1962 He is survived by his wife, Betty Arrowood Thomason; two daughters, Anita T.
  Phillips of Cliffside, and Sheila T. Vance of Navarre, Fla.;
four sisters, Nellie Cato of Spartanburg, S.C., Margaret Sanders of Mooresville, Dovie Jean Walker of Augusta, Ga., and Becky Lowery of Salisbury; one brother, George Thomason of Camp Creek; and four grandchildren.
  Arrangements are being handled by McMahan’s Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m.
  Saturday at Shingle Hollow Congregational Holiness in Rutherfordton. The Rev. Jack Crane, Dr. Cecil Lovelace, and the Rev. Ralph Jones will officiate. Interment will fol­low in the church cemetery with full military honors provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard.

Brooks Piercy Sr., 93, (Class of '32) died Tuesday May 27 at Crowley Memorial Hospital.  The funeral was Thursday, May 29 at Boiling Springs Baptist Church; and burial was at Cleveland Memorial Park.

Ray Everett Goins died Tuesday, May 20th.  On Friday, friends will be received at McMahan's Funeral Home in Rutherfordton between 1 - 2 PM.  The funeral will be at 2PM, officiated by Reverend Donald Hollifield. Following this is the internment at Oak Springs Baptist Church.

According to the records Mary Esther Wells was born in '45 and was at the school from '49 to '51.

Hugh Simpson (class of '40) died.  The following is his Obituary from the Daily Courier:

William Hugh Simpson, 84, of Hodge Street, Rutherfordton, died Friday, January 25, 2008, at Hospice House in Forest City.
  A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Claude Simpson and Ima Guffey Simpson. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rutherfordton, a retired Rural Mail Carrier, and owned and operated Simpson Auction and Real Estate Company for over 50 years.
  Mr. Simpson was a World War II veteran and a prisoner of war during the Battle of the Bulge. He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Mr. Simpson was also preceded in death by a son, Michael M.
  Simpson of Asheville, who died in 2002.
  He is survived by his wife, Lucille Fincannon Simpson; two sons, Bill Simpson of Columbia, S.C., and Joe Simpson and wife, Reba, of Rutherfordton;one brother, Harold Simpson of Union Mills; four grandchildren, Charlie Simpson, Brooke Simpson, Josh Simpson, and Zach Simpson, and two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Catie Funeral arrangements are being handled by McMahan’s Funeral Home Inc., 249 South Main Street, Rutherfordton, where the family will receive friends Sunday, January 27, from 5 to 7 p.m.
  Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 28, at the First Baptist Church of Rutherfordton with the Rev.

James McDaniel (class of '40) died.  The following is his Obituary from the Daily Courier:

James Madison McDaniel, age 86, of Rutherfordton, NC, died on Monday, January 21, 2008, at White Oak Manor Nursing Home in Rutherfordton.
  A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Rector McDaniel and the late Sally ( Lynch) McDaniel, and the widower of the late Joyce Lillian Pendergrass. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He served in the US Army during World War II, and was a Charter Member of the Gilkey Ruritan Club and a member of Woodmen of the World.
  He is survived by his daughter, Peggy M. (McDaniel) Saunders of Morganton, NC; a sister, Elizabeth M. Hendrix of Rutherfordton; and a grandson, Cecil James (Jake) Saunders of Morganton.
  Arrangements are being handled by McMahan’s Funeral Home Inc., 249 South Main St., Rutherfordton, NC, where the family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 23, 2008. Funeral service will be at McMahan’s Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 pm on Wednesday. Interment will be at Round Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Union Mills, NC.
